Description
What are Straw Straws?
History repeats itself. In the 1800s straws were made from ryegrass, but the process used was not sustainable and the plant used used to turn to mush. Straw straws are drinking straws made from 100% organic straw stems. These are grown in a sustainable farm to produce a high quality drinking straw which is fully compostable at home or in normal compost waste facilities, or even just in nature (but we do not condone littering so don’t dispose any in nature, even though you can!). They are then hand cut, sterilised and sent on their way to you!
These drinking straws do not have any particular taste so they will not alter the feel and taste of a drink. They are strong yet somewhat flexible – they will not break easily and will never get soggy be it in cold or hot drinks, and if bent they might crease but will continue functioning as normal! In our tests we even flattened the straw and almost split it down its side and it still functioned normally! If you think about it, the original plant survived all kinds of weather and still made it to your drink!
Our straws are also 100% gluten free and vegan. Since the straws come from the stalk of the plant there is no seed material which contains gluten in the straw itself, and since there are no animals involved in the process of making these straws or any animal derivatives these are also 100% vegan!
Benefits of using our straws
Straw straws are the best kind of disposable straw that one can use. The best reason we can give you is that you are not harming the environment when disposing of them. They end up in compost bins and facilities where they become nutrients once again! Some other benefits include the fact that they do not get soggy unlike paper straws, they can be used for both cold and hot drinks and are strong in general.
There is no need to clean these unlike stainless steel and bamboo straws, just chuck them in the compost bin along with your party food leftovers! This means that when using our straws you will be saving water from cleaning!
The only downside we can think of is that our straws are better suited for watery drinks such as cocktails, juices, water and soft drinks but not thick milkshakes
Plastic, Paper, PLA (cornstarch), Straw Straws
There are a number of drinking straw materials available on the market, but all have their negative impacts in some way or another. We found the best compromise both cost and environment wise when we introduced straw drinking straws to Malta. The usual plastic strawsare out of the question as these are soon banned by the EU!
Paper straws get soggy, they are unsustainable to grow and require chemicals to process. PLA straws, or any plastic looking straw marketed as “#IAMNOTPLASTIC” or “Plastic free straw” or similar are really and truly not plastic, but they are made from plant based material, mainly starches, which require industrial composting facilities – which we lack in Malta and are expensive to keep. They possess similar features to plastic straws which is good, but their eco-friendliness is not what you might think! They also break down in hot drinks which is not ideal. Other straws such as steel and bamboo straws are great, but come with the added cost of cleaning, and you probably would not find them as handy as other kinds of straws.
